This book is amazing. Buy it.

A wonderful surprise
It is rare to find such a clear explication of a topic in what is typically a turgid field. Henderson manages to combine originality of thought with lucid writing to create a little gem of a book. While sometimes she may stretch a bit to make her points, it is forgivable in service of developing her provocative thesis. A bit steep at ( ), but nonetheless worthwhile.

The Scots of Virginia

Truly America's greatest Patriots!
All Scot-Americans and, in fact, all Americans who are interested in the founding of this great nation will thoroughly enjoy this entertaining and instructive story of the early settlement of the people, who not only gave this nation its basic principles, but who also provided the majority of the patriots who fought and died to establish the first democracy
in world history.
Today when our nation is threated with terrorism and American patriotism is being greatly challenged, it is interesting to review the beginning of our revolutionary concepts of freedom and democracy which are now under attack throughout many parts of the world. What a great and timely review this is of the spirit and the meaning of American patriotism!

The Scots of Virginia won independence/ freedom for Ameria!
The author begins with the history of Scotland and the Scottish people, their heavy settlement in Northern Ireland and the Great Migration of about 300,000 Ulster Scots to America. As mainly frontiersmen they helped win the French-Indian war then from their Presbyterian churches they not only were the first to call for freedom from Great Britain but they also constituted the majority of the patriots who fought and won the Revolutionary War.
Truly, the Scots of Virginia were America's greatest patriots!

Stateside Soldier : Life in the Women's Army Corps, 1944-1945

A wonderful look at one woman's experience in the WAC
Aileen Kilgore Henderson's "Stateside Soldier: Life in the Women's Army Corps 1944-1945" published by University of South Carolina Press in 2001 is an excellent read.

Between her family members, friends and herself Aileen acquired many documents to put together this book. Some of it was excerpts from her daily diary. Some were letters that went back and forth between family and friends. But Aileen was able to weave them all together to make an interesting story of what it was like being in the Women's Army Corps during World War II.

She started with a look at her birth home, family, jobs, and a desire to serve our country while in her early twenties. The Army almost didn't take her because she was underweight but on 3 February 1944 Private Aileen Kilgore was on her way from Palos, Alabama to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia for Basic Training.

Aileen made entries to her diary almost every day for the next month. She also found time to write letters home and to her friends. I wondered when she found time to write so much having been in the Army myself but perhaps it was our generation's differences.

Her interactions with fellow and sister Veterans helped to make the book very interesting. The letters from her friends who were sent overseas helped to show the differences of the training and day to day life between being stateside and overseas. She showed how friendships here and there made the difference to these women and kept them going when they were ready to give up at times.

Aileen included twenty-four photographs in the book and an Epilogue where she pointed out what became of some of the folks she met so long ago. I would recommend this book for students and adults of all ages. It should be part of our women's studies programs in colleges as well as our military history collections. And it should be included in gift shops of military/Veterans museum as well as on Army installations for all to see. Aileen Kilgore Henderson and the University of South Carolina Press should be proud of this book published in 2001.

How the first women soldiers forged new ground for the rest
This book tells how it was for the first women to serve our country. There is happiness, saddness, and even the bittersweet. The Army had to switch gears to provide the "right" sizes for women, which even now we don't always get the right size, so it's the closest men's size. The fact that the training took place in the Midwest in the winter at a converted US Cav. post was fascinating to learn. To bad Fort Des Moines was not conservered for others to see. This was a wonderful and insightful book to read. I recommend it for anyone interested in women's place in military history.

Story Hour

Fractured fairy tales - funny, macabre, wonderful
This is a fabulous collection of poems based on well-known fairy tales and nursery rhymes - but with a modern point of view and a wry, often grim twist. Imagine an advice columnist responding to the wife in "Bluebeard", or Hansel and Gretel's appearance in juvenile court... Here's a sample from the poem based on the story of the princess and the frog, as told by her parents:

"...
As for that fairy tale she likes to tell
About the frog who scrambled from the well
And gave her back her ball (all dripping wet),
Then turned into a Prince (that's how they met),
We know he's not a Prince; the point is this:
Our poor romantic daughter thinks he is."

Some of the takes are very funny, but nearly always disquieting. (There's a poem based on "Old Mother Hubbard," from her dog's point of view - sounds goofy but it's utterly heart-rending.) I re-read the poems often, and thoroughly enjoy them. Recommended!

Fairy Tale Poetry For All
Hay's collection of poetry explores many of the well-known fairy tales, nursery rhymes and fables from our childhood. While other poets, such as Anne Sexton, have been focused on adult audiences, Hay's poetry can be used with younger audiences, too. The book is filled with themes which adults can enjoy, however. The collection offers inspiration to poets to explore the themes in the folklore of our childhoods with grace and charm. Happily ever after is not expected by Hay, but she does not express a hopeless future either. The characters from the tales deal with the potential realities that come after their original "happily ever afters."

Ten Million Steps: The Incredible Journey of Paul Reese, Who Ran Across America-A Marathon a Day for 124 Days-At Age 73

Wonderful Book...
Paul Reese was a miracle. I had read a number of books about people that walked across America, but a marathon a day?!?! You will be inspired. Written in a very straight forward manner, it won't be the poetry of the words that get you, it will be the poetry of this man's amazing spirit that will make you a fan. I highly recomend this book.

Great book for Ultra runners!
I found this book totally addictive. It was a day-to-day journal of Paul Reece's Run X USA and the things he saw and did with his wife! This book sucked me right in and I wasn't able to put it down!! Lots of tips for wana-be runners and those who are veterans! Great tips for getting on the open road and what to watch out for! Fantastic book! Made me want to RUN!!

A Week 'Til the Wedding (Harlequin Yours Truly)

Fast and Funny!
I was put off by the title as I don't like books where the h/h meet and fall in love forever in just a few days. However, I opened the book and found they'd been friends since childhood. Whew!

This was such a cute book. I stayed up late reading it. I liked Fletch and Bren both. I hate to quibble with the previous reader, but Fletch never did agree to marry Dominique. If you'll remember, he was an A1 procrastinator and was going to take that week to decide if he did want to marry her. Almost immediately, he started noticing Bren as a woman instead of the little girl/one of the guys/best friend way he has always viewed her.
It takes him no time at all to realize that Bren is the one he wants to grow old with.

Dominique was never in the running. She is pretty peripheral anyway and we only see her twice in the whole book. Although her name crops up quite often.

This is a nice beach/fireside book. For any season. A feel good kind of book. When you're done, share it with someone else.

LAND YOUR MAN!
Humorous story of the girl next door (Brenda) who's been deeply in love with her stubborn but good looking neighbor (Fletcher) for years only Fletcher seems immune to his childhood friends' little sister!

Not to mention the fact he's about to marry someone else! Poor Brenda. No poor Fletcher! His girlfriend, the gorgeous witch/bimbo/medusa (Dominque) issued an ultimatum -- marry her in 7 days or else! So the reluctant Fletcher agrees.

How to stop the wedding...mmm...Bren only has a week -- fortunatly for her she's given a copy of the much useful guide LAND YOUR MAN!

Will it work!

Why African American Youth Are Attracted to Non-Christian/Non-Traditional Religions and Sects
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 1998)
Author: Joyce T. Henderson

Educational
I have often wondered why African American youth choose to become members of cults and other non-Christian religions. It has been a mystery until now. Dr. Joyce Henderson, author of the book Why African American Youth are Attracted to Non-Christian/Nontraditional Religions and Sects, gives us insight into some of the possible contributing factors. Henderson, who earned her doctorate degree in Ministry from Carolina University of Theology in 1997, has worked with children for thirty-two years at various Recreation Centers throughout the Los Angeles area. She has also held positions of instructor and Associate Pastor and is a Certified Marriage and Family Therapist.

She conducted a study to determine the needs of Young African American youth. Twenty-eight mothers and 60 children between the ages of 5 through 19 were selected from congregations of several churches in the Watts and Compton area of Los Angeles. The interviews were conducted in the church schools, Church and home setting with or without the parents present.

Now with that aside let's talk about the contents of the book. Written in ten chapters and beginning with the chapter on Methodology and ending with a Message to the Clergy and Church the book is very educational. Henderson devotes a chapter to explaining which religions are Christian and Non-Christian. The religions discussed here are Buddhism, Baha'I faith, Islamic, Jehovah Witness and Cults. Each of the religion's characteristics and beliefs are discussed along with the attractions for African American Youth. Most of the chapters contain written personal interviews with people of that particular faith or cult. Henderson's factual information on the different religions and practice was taken from newspaper clippings and interviews with the officials. She is objective in her writing and used the Holy Bible as a reference. She does not blame any religion as the cause but simply states the conclusion of her study and offers some suggestions.

I enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to Parents, Ministers, Sunday School Teachers, Youth Directors, and Communities. I now have a much better understanding of the many different religions and their attraction to African American youth.

Intellectual Insight on the Popularity of Religious Sects
This book is truely a blessing to those who are interested in finding out why young African-American Youth are attracted to these religious sects. This book purports to study the causes that lead young African Americans from the Church into non-Christian groups.Included in the work are results from personal interviews, case studies and field surveys conducted by the author. A careful study of these non-Christian non-Traditional groups and sects enable us to view them in their variety and their different degrees of approach to genuine New Testament Christianity. Based upon the findings in the study, the author will suggest what local churches may do to better connect with this generation of youth and some positive steps towards evangelism. It is hoped that this book contributes to some understanding of non-Christians/non-Traditional religions and sects, help churches, parents and communities to prevent such a mass exodus, assist to reclaim and restore to us our prodigal sons and daughters to their rightful place as the children of God-in-Christ who have been granted life everlasting through the sacrifice for all of us by Jesus the Christ who paid our sins.

The 1998 Pushcart Prize Xxii: Best of the Small Presses (The Pushcart Prize , Vol 22)

PUSHCART PRIZE XXII
Pushcart Prize is an annual offering, a collection of short fiction, essays, memoirs and poetry. For anyone strapped for time (and who isn't these days) short pieces may satisfy the bibliophile's appetite. I have delved into several volumes of this series, and I think XXII is the BEST. The editors of the series choose from small and little known literary journals, often highlighting the brilliance of fledgling writers and occasionally better known writers. In Vol. XXII a story titled WOMEN DREAMING OF JERSULAM tells the story of a shelter for battered women in Jerusalem. With all the turmoil in the Middle East these days, it is a perfectly appropriate story. Within the Shelter are Jewish women from Russia, Hungary, America, Ethopia. Their stories are wrenchingly revealed and brilliantly written. The divisions among them reveal human (with a capital H) at their worst, and most natural. A real page turner. It is impossible to review all the offerings in this volume, but as a collection of diverse authors I find it the best I have ever encountered. It covers a broad spectrum of cultures, generations, classes, writing styles and points of view. There are "coming of age" stories (OXYGEN) stories of forgiveness and redemption, family struggle, everything life holds. Jim Croce sang of "Time in a Bottle." This book is "Life in a Book."

It is the ONLY collection I know of that includes fiction, non fiction and poetry. The best bang for your buck!
